If you’re like most IT leaders, you’re tasked with safeguarding your organization’s data against escalating cyber threats like ransomware and data breaches—and restoring operations as quickly as possible when an incident strikes. In a crisis, speed is everything. That’s why choosing the right cyber resilience solution, despite competing claims and complex options, is essential.

A recent independent evaluation by Signal65, detailed in a just-published white paper, compared Cohesity’s data protection appliance against a leading competitor. The findings aren’t surprising to us, or any of our thousands of customers. Our customers tell us we are the superior choice for speed, reliability, and simplicity. Now, this third-party evaluation confirms it. Here’s a closer look at the white paper and its methodology.

The stakes are high: Why cyber resilience matters

Cyberattacks are growing in frequency and severity, with ransomware and data exfiltration threatening operations, revenue, and reputation. Recent market research highlights a rising awareness of the need for robust cyber resilience, as IT teams face pressure to protect data and recover quickly from disruptions.

For you and your organization, the decision isn’t just about backups—it’s about ensuring your organization can bounce back fast when incidents happen. Cohesity’s DataProtect solution, validated by Signal65, excels in delivering rapid recovery, high reliability, and cost-effective data protection.

Signal65’s head-to-head evaluation

Signal65 conducted a rigorous comparison of Cohesity’s hyperconverged appliance against a software-based competitor in an enterprise environment, testing backup performance, storage efficiency, and recovery speed. The tests included multiple backup operations—starting with a full backup followed by several incremental backups. Recovery testing measured both the success rates and the time required to restore virtual machines (VMs) to operational status. Backup and recovery testing were done across a range of VM sizes and volumes to reflect real-world scenarios.Signal65 To start, the infrastructure difference was noticeable. Cohesity’s setup consisted of a single hyperconverged appliance, combining data protection software and backup storage in one platform. The competitor’s configuration was far more complex—requiring a controller VM, two physical data mover servers, and external storage.

Cohesity’s streamlined, all-in-one design reduces complexity compared to the competitor’s multi-component setup, saving you time and administrative overhead.

Backup performance: Faster, more efficient

When it comes to backups, speed and storage efficiency are critical to minimizing operational impact. Signal65’s tests showed Cohesity outperforming the competitor across the board:

  1. Cohesity provided on average 50% greater data reduction, thereby increasing the effective capacity of the storage system.
  2. For backup operations, Cohesity was on average 46% faster than the competitor, with the advantage increasing with larger data sets.
  3. When recovering VMs, Cohesity delivered at least 32% faster recovery speed than the competitor.
  4. When using the NBDSSL (network block device SSL) method, Cohesity was able to recover 67% faster than the competitor.

This efficiency translates to lower costs and less infrastructure sprawl, a key consideration for budget-conscious IT directors. With Cohesity, you can protect more data in less time, ensuring your backup windows fit within tight operational schedules.

Recovery: Where Cohesity shines

When an outage or ransomware attack hits, recovery speed is your lifeline. Signal65’s tests revealed Cohesity’s unmatched performance in this critical area. Signal65’s independent testing revealed Cohesity’s unmatched performance in this critical area.

For full recovery of 100 to 1000 VMs—from powering on to fully migrating the VMs to the target storage, Cohesity restored data 1.4X to 2.3X faster than the competitor.

The competitor’s limitation of handling only a few VMs at a time forced slow, batch-based recovery, whereas Cohesity restored all VMs simultaneously with a 100% success rate.

Further, the competitor struggled with reliability, encountering errors when restoring more than 5–15 VMs at once, while Cohesity performed flawlessly. Cohesity’s ability to restore systems quickly and reliably means less downtime, protecting your organization from financial losses and reputational damage.

Fast data recovery fuels faster forensics

The Cohesity advantages for backup performance, particularly storage efficiency, and recovery go beyond IT efficiency—they deliver critical value for security operations, too.

For Instant Recovery of 25 VMs, Cohesity powered on all systems in under 1 minute, while the competitor took over 8 hours—a 480X advantage.

Speed matters for security. Storage-efficient backups and instant recovery mean security teams get faster access to forensic data in backups—crucial when every second counts. With Cohesity, incident responders can quickly restore data to help investigate how the attack happened and determine which systems and data may be infected. This is a vital step in eradicating threats and mitigating vulnerabilities exploited.

For IT operations, the ability to recover systems rapidly from multiple points in time to determine the most recent, usable image is essential to bringing critical services back online as quickly as possible,  In contrast, the competitor’s slower, error-prone recovery process can stall these efforts —adding risk, cost, and downtime when your teams can least afford it.

With Cohesity, you gain peace of mind knowing your organization is equipped to recover quickly, securely, and at scale.

Simplicity: Less hassle, more control

The competitor’s complex setup—requiring multiple servers, external storage, and ongoing maintenance—adds unnecessary burden to your IT team. Cohesity’s single appliance approach simplifies deployment and management. Signal65 noted the competitor’s solution suffered from issues like NFS timeouts and datastore access errors during recovery, while Cohesity reported no such problems. This reliability and ease of use make Cohesity a low-maintenance, high-impact solution, allowing you to focus on driving business value rather than troubleshooting.

It’s time to choose Cohesity

As cyber incidents rise, you need a solution that delivers performance, reliability, and simplicity to minimize business downtime and bolster cyber resilience. Signal65’s evaluation proves Cohesity outperforms the competition in every key metric:

  • Minimized downtime: Whether restoring a handful of VMs or 1,000, Cohesity consistently recovers data faster—keeping your business running during a crisis.
  • Unmatched reliability: 100% recovery success rate, even for large-scale operations, unlike the competitor’s frequent errors.
  • Simplified management: A hyperconverged, all-in-one appliance reduces complexity, saving your team time and effort.

Don’t let indecision delay your cyber resilience strategy. Cohesity’s proven, third-party-validated solution empowers you to protect your organization’s data, recover faster, and stay resilient—all while streamlining operations. Choose Cohesity to confidently navigate today’s challenging IT landscape.

IBM iSeries, renowned for its stability, security, and scalability, continues to power essential operations across various industries—including finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail—collectively managing billions of dollars in transactions while storing customer data.

This blog details how the combination of LaserVault’s specialized IBM i backup solutions with Cohesity Data Cloud protects and secures your most valuable data. Together, these products offer an integrated, secure, and cost-effective approach to protecting crucial systems without compromise.

The IBM iSeries landscape in 2025

IBM iSeries (AS/400) systems, introduced over three decades ago, remain deeply ingrained in the IT infrastructures of Global 500 companies. With an estimated 100,000 active systems still operational worldwide, IBM i remains a backbone for enterprise resource planning, supply chain, and core business applications. Its reputation for rock-solid performance and integrated architecture has made it indispensable, even as cloud adoption and digital transformation initiatives accelerate across the enterprise.

However, the strategic value of IBM i data is now drawing increased scrutiny from security, compliance, and business continuity teams. Enterprise data is growing exponentially, and these systems host large volumes of highly sensitive information. Regulatory frameworks like GDPR, HIPAA, and SOX now demand more transparency, retention control, and recoverability than ever before. As a result, businesses are under pressure to modernize their IBM i data protection strategies—not by replacing the platform, but by integrating it into broader hybrid cloud and cyber resilience technologies.

Challenges in protecting IBM i Data

While IBM i is lauded for its stability, its traditional backup approaches often fail to deliver desired resilience outcomes. Many organizations still rely on tape-based backups, which are slow to recover, operationally intensive, and vulnerable to both environmental risks and human error. These methods also fall short when facing destructive cyberattacks, where recovery time and data immutability are critical. The lack of native integration with cloud storage and modern security solutions further compounds the challenge, creating silos that limit visibility and response.

Additionally, IBM i environments often lack real-time monitoring, centralized management, and are unable to meet evolving compliance and business continuity requirements. With increasing demands for shorter recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs), incumbent backup strategies are no longer sufficient. Enterprises must now look to integrate IBM i systems into a unified, automated, and secure cyber resilience strategy—one that aligns with both IT modernization goals and risk mitigation priorities.

LaserVault ViTL and key features

It is a known best practice (to optimize cost and performance) with IBM i systems to use Virtual Tape Libraries (ViTL) for backup. LaserVault, a leading vendor designed specifically for IBM i Systems, provides a mechanism to move data to ViTL systems by using Microsoft Windows Server and connecting to a Storage system that is then the target for the backup. It simplifies backup and recovery operations by saving backups to a hard drive, NAS, SAN, deduplication appliance, or the cloud—eliminating the need for physical tape. ViTL reduces storage costs with its deduplication feature and integrates seamlessly via Fiber Channel or SAS with iSeries, AS/400, System i, Linux, or AIX systems.

Some of the key features of LaserVault ViTL include:

  1. Compatibility with BRMS, Robot Save, and other backup software. Virtual tapes are recognized as standard tape media by IBM i and your backup software, giving you more flexibility with additional drives and slots without the need for extra hardware.
  2. Greater capacity for cartridges and drives at a lower cost, compared to other VTLs, delivers greater value.
  3. Integration with Cohesity Data Cloud.

How Cohesity helps you secure and protect IBM i Systems

Cohesity enables organizations to secure and protect IBM i Systems with Cohesity SmartFiles, a service of Cohesity Data Cloud. This approach seamlessly integrates immutable target storage, using SMB protocols for enhanced data security and protection.

Integrating with LaserVault ViTL to protect your data estate atop Cohesity Data Cloud offers you these outcomes:

  • Speed: Recover from cyberattacks many times faster compared to your previous systems.
  • Security: Improve your security posture, detect threats, and protect data.
  • Scale: Secure and protect IBM i Systems and the rest of your data sources on a single platform, even at a petabyte scale.

You’ll also appreciate other important capabilities about Cohesity Data Cloud, including:

  • Lifecycle management: Ensure data protection through full backups, incremental backups, and point-in-time recovery (PITR) workflows.
  • Storage efficiency: Achieve extremely high storage efficiency with global, variable-length deduplication and compression.
  • Multilayered cyber resilience and ransomware protection: Immutability safeguards backups from being deleted or overwritten for a specified duration or indefinitely.
  • Write once, read many (WORM): Store your backups using the WORM model, ensuring SEC Rule 17a-4(f) compliance.
  • Lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Reduce your data footprint with superior deduplication and compression.
  • Performance at web scale: Improve backup and restore times with scale-out architecture and unlimited scalability as your business grows.
  • Encryption everywhere: Cohesity Data Cloud features AES-256, FIPS-compliant encryption of data in flight and at rest.
  • Resilience: Highly resilient and fault-tolerant, with no single point of failure (SPOF).

We’ve also built specific features for workloads like IBM i Systems to improve your business outcomes, such as:

  • Live view of data written into the Cohesity storage system from IBM iSeries systems.
  • Restricted access to the view by allowing only an authorized set of IP addresses.
  • NTFS permissions restrict access at the File level, viz., read/write/modify/delete.
  • File auditing to record and monitor events occurring on your SMB view.
  • In-flight encryption enables you to use existing network infrastructure and not create isolated/dark/deadnet infrastructure to avoid man-in-the-middle attacks.
  • Data protection to take local snapshots of the live view.
    • Policy-based data replication from one cluster to another cluster for disaster recovery.
    • CloudArchive and Cloud Retrieve your data for long-term retention and disaster recovery in AWS, Azure, GCP, NAS, and S3-compatible storage platforms. Use Cloud Tier to reduce TCO.

Integrated architecture overview: LaserVault + Cohesity

To protect IBM iSeries systems, you need to associate a backup policy. The backup policy includes the backup configuration, a list of File Systems Volume/Volume Group mappings, backup schedules, and retention rules. This helps invoke IBM iSeries systems for backups that land in the LaserVault ViTL Tape Library. A Tape library has multiple Tapes/Tape Drives, which are defined on ViTL. The Tape library (defined on ViTL) is the endpoint that maps to the Cohesity SMB share path (which supports both FQDN and VIP). Cohesity provides this SMB share, which is the Cohesity View—web-scale, globally deduplicated, compressed storage. To use Cohesity View as a storage repository for the IBM iSeries system via LaserVault Virtual Tape Controller, complete the recommended steps below. To the IBM iSeries system, a LaserVault ViTL virtual tape drive appears as a physical drive connected by SCSI or Fiber Channel. The drive appears as media type L8 (i.e., using LTO Gen 8) by default, unless otherwise specified in the Virtual Tape Library for internal configuration files. Catalog information is stored in IBM iSeries, which has a mapping of storage pools. Catalog status on both IBM iSeries and LaserVault ViTL must be in sync. If it goes out of sync, the Catalog on iSeries takes precedence over LaserVault ViTL, and the conflict is resolved.

A closer look at a real-world implementation

Consider the following hypothetical scenario for an enterprise that wants to protect their mission-critical data. For this exercise, the enterprise IT team:

  • Has core legacy applications running on an IBM iSeries (AS/400) system.
  • Requires daily backups, off-site replication, and long-term retention to address compliance requirements.
  • Wants to modernize their backup strategy without disrupting existing workflows.

Let’s examine the solution in this scenario.

LaserVault ViTL is deployed on-premises:

  • It emulates an IBM TS3200 tape library.
  • IBM i uses BRMS to back up data directly to a Cohesity View via ViTL.
  • Backups are stored as virtual tape images on the Cohesity View.

Cohesity SmartFiles Views are used to:

  • Mount the Cohesity View as a backup directory.
  • Index and deduplicate the backup data.

The protection policy dictates how the data is replicated to another Cohesity cluster or cloud tier (e.g., AWS, Azure) for disaster recovery

Here’s the workflow of the combined solution in action.

  1. At the end of the business day, IBM i runs a BRMS job to back up the day’s transactions to ViTL.
  2. ViTL stores the backup as a virtual tape image to the Cohesity SmartFiles SMB View.
  3. Cohesity takes a snapshot of the SMB View to back up the virtual tape image locally with DataLock (WORM/immutability).
  4. Cohesity deduplicates, indexes, and replicates the backup to another Cohesity cluster and CloudArchive target of AWS S3.
  5. In case of failure, the IT team can restore via ViTL (from Cohesity cluster storage or Cohesity’s cloud copy).

Key benefits of the integrated Cohesity and LaserVault solution

This solution simplifies your data protection infrastructure with Cohesity DataProtect and LaserVault and makes your enterprise data more resilient.

  • Eliminate tapes and improve recovery performance: Cohesity DataProtect eliminates the need for tapes and reduces your recovery points by using the high ingest throughput of Cohesity Data Cloud.
  • Fast backups: Minimize your backup windows by ingesting data in parallel on the scale-out nodes of Cohesity Data Cloud.

Rob Sadowski recently joined Cohesity as our new Vice President of Product and Solutions Marketing. He spent the last eight years leading Google Cloud’s security messaging and platform security marketing. Before that, he was at RSA Security for almost a decade. You may have seen his name pop up in various articles or on television at CNBC, Fox Business, and the Financial Times, covering everything from data sovereignty to data breaches.

Helping our customers recover and minimize the business impact of data breaches, ransomware, and other incidents is a part of our everyday work. As the number of attacks and their costs continue to grow, resilience, the ability for your business to get back up and running, is what matters.

What does our new marketing lead for Cohesity’s products and solutions think about all of this? We wanted to get to know Rob a bit more, so we asked him five questions about work and life outside of work.

Five questions with Rob Sadowski

We’ve got three work-y questions, and two fun ones.

First question:

#1: At a dinner party, someone asks, “What do you do for a living?” How do you respond?

RS: I lead product marketing for the leading cyber resilience company. Hopefully, that’s an intriguing enough lead that they’ll ask more about resilience and what that means or what it entails: We help organizations ensure that the data that drives their business is safe. And when dealing with an incident that affects their data, we help minimize disruptions to their operations and ensure that they get back up and running as fast as possible.

#2: What’s changed in the cybersecurity business recently? And why’d you join Cohesity?

RS: The industry is so dynamic, but what has struck me recently is how organizations are changing their thinking about security incidents. The focus used to be on investigation: Who came at me? How did they get in? What were their techniques so we can defend against future attacks? This still happens, but the key conversation has shifted away from how they got in to: How do we get back up and running in a more secure state? In terms of some familiar industry frameworks, disciplines like response and recovery have become as important as prevention and detection, or even more so.

I wanted to come to a place that can support and accelerate this evolution of thinking and capabilities, to give organizations the confidence that they will bounce back when incidents happen. Helping organizations that operate some of the most critical services worldwide in what could be their most challenging times is a great mission to be a part of.

#3: What advice would you give yourself earlier in your career?

RS: Take risks. You may get only a few chances in your career to work for a potentially industry-changing, even world-changing organization and team. To drive the adoption of an essential new technology innovation from its inception. And if you’re not in a place like that, why not? You will always do your best work when you believe in the mission.

#4: What about outside of work? What keeps you busy?

RS: Anything that doesn’t have to happen too early in the morning. Golf, hikes, and following my favorite bands.

#5: When it comes to stacking the dishwasher, do you believe in order, and that everything has its proper place? Or, are you an agent of chaos, and it looks like a raccoon loaded the dishwasher?

RS: Ha, orderly. I usually have a good plan. Things have their proper places.

Bonus question: Star Wars or Star Trek?

RS: Star Wars. Not even close.

As ransomware and malware tactics evolve, your defenses must evolve just as quickly. Bad actors are after your secondary data. Immutable backups are your last line of defense once all other security measures have failed. That’s why Cohesity is leading the charge to protect and secure your data with a full suite of cyber resilience capabilities, including threat detection, forensic investigation, and secure recovery.

One exciting new development on this front: performing tried-and-true threat testing and running ransomware simulations on GA code on more of the Cohesity Data Cloud.

Now validating Cohesity DataProtect in REDLab

To deepen our commitment, we’ve expanded the scope of Cohesity REDLab, our proprietary lab, to include Cohesity DataProtect. REDLab is where we rigorously test the real-world resilience of our products using live malware, advanced exploits, and modern attack techniques. Our REDLab is an air-gapped environment designed to allow full-spectrum threat testing while protecting Cohesity infrastructure.

For IT and security leaders, this means confidence that your backup and recovery solutions have been tested to deliver the highest levels of data security. They’re hardened and tested components of your cybersecurity strategy.

Since REDLab was built in early 2023, the focus has been on validating Cohesity NetBackup software and NetBackup appliances. With the addition of DataProtect, we’re raising the bar—ensuring that more of our platform is hardened against advanced threats before they reach your environment.

We now continuously validate DataProtect’s product security posture—and will expand to include threat detection and threat hunting in the future—all under real-world and fully isolated conditions.

Inside REDLab: Real-world rigor for real-world threats

What makes REDLab unique is its realism and rigor. Our dedicated team of security researchers and engineers exchange threat intelligence with leading agencies like the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC), a consortium of federal government, private and international partners led in the U.S. by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Cohesity Data Security Alliance, and the broader open-source community.

Our REDLab team collects real malware and exploit kits from global honeypots, sandboxes, and intelligence feeds. Then it conducts both static and dynamic analysis, including detonating malware against Cohesity products in controlled environments. By analyzing and mapping malware kill chains, our REDLab team curates and fine-tunes detection mechanisms, including YARA rules, indicators of compromise (IOCs), tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), and file hashes. Their work also involves benchmarking detection accuracy, response speed, and recovery performance.

The valuable insights from this hands-on work, combined with product telemetry, help curate threat feeds that power security capabilities across both DataProtect and NetBackup. Whether you’re a customer of NetBackup or DataProtect, you can benefit from industry-leading ransomware protection.

Fueling a more cyber-resilient future: Sharing threat research

We believe in strengthening the broader cyber community. So, we’ll continue to regularly publish our findings, in-depth malware analysis, and recommendations for prevention and remediation based on REDLab validation to help IT and security teams stay ahead of evolving threats.

Our REDLab mission is simple: build products that are not only resilient by design, but resilient by validation—under the harshest conditions we can throw at them.
